How I redefined my sexuality after marriage
A few days ago, I woke up to a Buzzfeed article about True Blood actress Anna Paquin defending her marriage to a cisgender heterosexual man as a bisexual woman. I am paraphrasing, but the comment was that it was “unfortunate” that her marriage “does little for the cause.” In 2021 that could be the conclusion some reach, but years ago that was far from the thought I had when I first learned that an openly bisexual woman married a straight man. My first thought was more along the lines of. . . “You can do that?”

We Need to Talk
My experience took place when I was seven. I’m not going to go into detail, partly because over the years I’ve pushed a lot of them out of my mind. It almost feels like a weird nightmare at this point, 20 years later. Also, I take trigger warnings seriously and wouldn’t want anyone to be affected by the violent details I do remember. What I will say is that it involves being locked in a closet with two younger brothers while the older brother played video games with his back against the door. All of the perpetrators were under 15. And because of something some people familiar with fundamental religions call “the two witness rule” no one was ever charged. My attackers grew up and moved away unscathed. No one ever knew.

A figure, A face
Hi new journal! It was finally happening. My dream job: Visual Merchandiser. You know when you’re a little kid and your parents takes you to the nice neighborhood? And you see a really fancy store window? I feel like everyone has that moment. And when I had that moment, I decided I want to do that. I must’ve been all of five but I knew that’s what I would do when I grew up. And all of that work led me here. Six years of school and an endless line of crappy jobs had led me here. On the visual merchandising team of one of the biggest stores in the country. And the bigger the store, the bigger the store window.

A Family Haunting
Judy was tired from driving for hours, but she’s glad she gave her husband a break. After a while the glare of headlights on the highway put a strain on his already bad eyes. She reached into the backseat and unclipped her daughter Ivy from her car seat. Fatigue made the weight of her tiny body seem heavier. She took a moment to appreciate the angelic curls falling into her peaceful face despite the dead weight.
