My Champion
Dear Strong Woman, You amaze me. I need to start right there because I know you haven't heard it nearly enough. All those times you felt like no one saw you, I hope you know I saw you clearly. All the times you spoke and thought that no one heard you, I assure you I did. Your words still resonate in my mind each time I face tough times, in fact. All those times you took care of everyone else without a single expectation or a single thank you... I bet you felt so unappreciated. I'm here to say that I not only appreciate you, but I love you. It's your love that built my spirit. It's your kindness and humility that taught me what matters most. It's your devotion to your family that made me who I am today.

Merlot Magic
Merlot. It all started with a single glass of merlot. It was the most magical nigh t of m y life... I sat, semi-slouched forward at the small, rounded table made of antiqued wood. I noticed the tiny elements of brass on the hinges that sparkled as I tilted my head from side to side, enjoying the game of catching its light. I swirled my glass in my hand just enough to watch the deep-colored wine move cylindrically, stopping before it could make me feel dizzy. I heard the door begin to open, and I looked in expectation across the cafe. It was my favorite little place: quiet atmosphere and the best lasagna I'd tasted outside of Italy. I looked down briefly as I ran my hands through my hair and straightened out the shoulders of my blouse, reminding myself that surely I looked at least presentable.
