We Are Diana Prince

'If it means interfering in an ensconced, outdated system to help just one woman, man, or child... I am willing to accept the consequences.' -Wonder Woman

A person connects with a character, storyline, or even a community for a number of reasons. My current icons are Wonder Woman and Jessica Jones. I didn't find them in the comic book store or, in the case of Wonder Woman, on reruns on TNT. I found my love of them when they hit the screen in the last few years. The idea that a woman could save the day when her male counterparts didn't think she could made my little feminist heart sing. And with the state of the world as it is right now, we need all the heroes that we can get. And the amazing thing about Wonder Woman is that she's not just Diana Prince. She's all of us. Diana Prince is white, black, indigenous, Middle Eastern, LGBTQIA+, Trans+, Nonbinary and Genderqueer.

Diana Prince is in the news every day. She is the teenage girl who stood up to her attackers when they came after her on a bus for speaking out against them. We call her Malala. She's the First Lady of the first African American President of the United States who said "When they go low, we go high." We call her Michelle. She's the young woman who sat for the bar exam when every other person around her was a man... and she passed. We call her Hillary. She's the woman who reclaimed her time when her male colleagues were cutting her off and trying to undermine her. We call her Maxine. She is the young actress who came forward and began a movement by saying #MeToo. We call her Alyssa.

Diana Prince is in every March. Every protest against the toxic world that wants to tell us that we are less than. She is the Parkland survivors who will not sit down and shut up because they are told that they are "just kids" and can't affect change in this world. She is Emma Gonzalez, who at 17-years-old stood up to the NRA and said "Enough." She is the 11-year-old little girl who stood in front of the crowds at the March for Our Lives and told everyone about the women of color who are killed every day but that the media forgets to mention.

We are in a constant state of awareness right now, which leads to a feeling of fight or flight and this has become wearisome. We cannot win this fight on our own, and this is when we need to call upon our own Diana Prince to help us get through. In a world that wants to police our bodies and our language everywhere from the workplace to our schools to Instagram, we must stay aware of what is happening. #Women, #Stripper, and #Pasties are just some of the women-centered hashtags that are currently banned on the social media platform and is drawing backlash from women across the country.

Diana Prince is more than a superhero, she is a revolution. Modern feminism has been given a lot of flak in recent years because some of the loudest voices are also doing the most damage. But what so many of us fail to realize is that we can do the most good by helping each other up when we fall and standing next to our brothers and sisters as we fight for change. And the best way to affect change is to get involved in causes that do not directly impact us. Because if we are all together in the fight to improve this world, we will inevitably make it that much better.

We are all Diana Prince. We are all warriors for change so long as we never stop trying.
