Two Super Easy Catwalk-Inspired Hairstyles for Autumn

Hair for those clumsy of hand and little of patience.

If you’re anything like me, hair is basically your Achilles' heel (apart from crippling mental illness, I mean). I consistently get to the end of doing my *flawless* makeup, look at my raggedy new bob in the mirror and think… “Cool. Understated. No motivation to improve upon.” More often than not it’s a super chic, unbrushed, hanging by the sides of my face life for me.

But, I’m learning, nice hair actually makes the world of difference to your “lewk.” Do people on the street actually tend to notice your seamless eyeshadow transitions? Not so much. But a couple of tiny lil plaits or a smooth sleek ponytail is pretty hard to ignore. And actually not particularly hard or time consuming to achieve. Here are two low-skill, high-fashion looks for your follicles.

First is a sleek side pony inspired by JW Anderson. Sleek is a word that is uncommonly associated with my hair—it’s usually more “tangled” or “fluffy.” But with the correct products and tools, smoothing and taming was actually mega easy.

Step one is to take down your hair from the mad bun it is inevitably in. It’ll look wild, but don’t worry.

Next, spray all through the lengths and ends with a lightweight oil. I like the L’Oreal Ever Riche Oil Precieux, but anything light enough to be dispersed through a mist is fine for the job.

Then you need to brush. The best one for the job in my opinion is the frighteningly named Sheila Stotts Removal Brush. Don’t worry, it’s not going to remove your hair—it’s designed for hair extension removal. I don’t exactly know why that means it’s brilliant for non-extensioned hair, but best believe it is.

Once you’ve brushed through the light oil, your hair will be left looking slightly fluffy but definitely soft. To minimise fluff, my top trick is to spry a liquidy product into the ends. This is a leave in conditioner from Sachajuan. It’s really great and smells like tea.

Now, using the same Sheila Stotts brush (or similar), manoeuvre your hair into a low side ponytail and secure with a tie. For final sleekness and tidiness, I spray the Denman Small Porcupine Style Grooming Brush with hairspray (this one is from Tresemme) and smooth down any flyaways.

Ta-Dah! You are now officially a model.

Ok, next. A summery, hippy-esque style perfect for festivalling or beer gardening, a la the SS17 runways of Valentino.

Centre part your hair using a comb. This look is fairly relaxed and unstructured, but I think the crispness of the parting is essential. It’s like a grounding foundation to the look.

Next, take two small sections on either side on your parting, and pull them forward. Take the rest of your hair and pull it away out of sight and out of mind. This look is so reminiscent of the 90s, so if you’re into that, you can stop there.

Now make these two tiny sections into two tiny plaits. To secure, you’ll want to either use tiny little elastic hairbands (mine are from ASOS), or just spray on a bunch of hairspray into the ends.

Then take the rest of your hair back down and spray it with a wave spray to add texture and movement. I love the John Frieda Beach Blonde for this, as it isn’t as drying for damaged hair like mine, plus it smells like beaches.

And, you’re done! Enjoy swooshing your hair about and being generally delightful. And now no one can accuse you of not making the effort with your hair. Even if the effort is an under-five-minute rush job. Don’t worry —your secret is safe with me.
