Ellen Ripley - 'Alien'

Ripley was a Warrant Officer and one of the most experienced individuals known to have survived encounters with the Xenomorph on the ship Nostromo. Ripley helped change the landscape for females in movies. She’s been celebrated as a flame thrower-wielding badass and strong mother. She is not defined by any superhero traits or abilities and she repeatedly displays frustration at having her decisions overridden, and persistent terror when encountering the Aliens. But it’s her perseverance in the face of these many combined challenges that make her so acceptable to viewers.

Hermione Granger - 'Harry Potter'

Come on, you knew she had to be somewhere on this list. Hermione Granger is no stranger to anyone and served to inspire many girls who grew up and admired her.

Arguably the smartest student at Hogwarts, she was one of the main reasons for Harry's victories.

Hermione first met Harry and Ron aboard the Hogwarts Express. Both boys found Hermione as an insufferable know-it-all. Her eagerness to please her professors and her constant correct answers reinforced their opinion, but later Hermione stepped in to take the blame from Ron and Harry after they had saved her from a troll. Harry and Ron were grateful and the three quickly became friends. Later Hermione played a crucial role in protecting the stone from Voldemort.

Katniss Everdeen - 'Hunger Games'

If you have ever channel surfed you more than likely have come across The Hunger Games once or twice. Ever since it was released on DVD, it has blown up on almost every TV channel.

The books themselves were adored by fans but the movies were no exception.

Katniss was a strong character who learnt how to take care of not only herself but her family. The Hunger Games takes place in a cruel dystopian world that Katniss has to conquer to save the ones she loves.

Merida - 'Brave'

The next one, Merida, has a lot in common with Katniss. Both females are more than powerful especially with a bow in hand.

Merida is the main character in the Disney movie Brave that shows a 'brave' young women fighting for what she believes in. Her parents try to push a man on her but she refuses and shows them that she can take care of herself.

If you are looking for a child friendly movie to inspire your daughter this is it. Merida depends on no one but herself and helps young girls find their adventurous side.

Mulan - 'Mulan'

Mulan, like Merida, is a Disney character. This movie was the first Disney movie that showed a princess being more than a damsel in distress waiting for a prince.

The movie takes place in China where Mulan has brought disgrace to her family because she doesn't fit in the traditional female role and tends to act out. When her father is called to war she quickly takes his armor and goes to take his place. To protect her father she fights in the war and fights the villain with nothing but a fan.
