And Why They Are So Important

When I originally developed this list in my early 20s, I had relegated it just to "women," but as the science points to gender and sex as a spectrum, I've figured "femme" would be the most inclusive. These are my personal opinions, and therefore, more like guidelines than actual rules.

1. A Little Black Outfit

Dress, pantsuit, whatever. It doesn't matter, but one should always have a little black outfit handy. They are good for parties, dates, professional functions, work, and funerals. The little black outfit is versatile, can be dressed up or down depending on accessories and shoes, and in all frankness there should be more than one.

I personally keep one at home, one in my car, and one in the office. Just in case.

2. Real Diamond Earrings

Even if you never wear them, it is always important to have them. Why? Love and money may be temporary, but diamonds are forever. They will, in the current economy always have value, and thus can be sold if the times get really hard. Or if the world ends, they can be harvested to use for tools. Additionally they are always understated and classy when paired with your little black outfit.

3. A Real Pearl Necklace

Another classically understated accessory, that is timeless enough to never go out of fashion, and if times are very hard, rarely loses value, so you can sell it in a pinch. Pairs well with your diamond earrings, and little black outfit. Offers an air of sophistication to the wearer.

4. Red Shoes

If you are the kind of Femme that wears heels, I always say a nice pair of patent leather (or vegan equivalent) of red pumps are ideal. There are several reasons for this. Firstly, a dash of color never hurt anyone, in fact in a sea of little black outfits, red pumps, paired with matching lipstick can make you stand out among your peers. Additionally, put on a pair of jeans, an un-tucked button up shirt, and a pair of red pumps, and you can go just about anywhere without being over or under dressed. Besides, what Femme doesn't want their very own pair of ruby slippers?

5. A Car with Your Name on the Title

Assuming you know how to drive. There are so many reasons that this one is important. There are so many traps laid for us femmes in the world. So many ways to make us stay in uncomfortable or dangerous situations. Make sure you always have the means to leave, a place to sleep, and a way to get where you are going. Make sure no one can take it away from you. Never share the title with your significant other, have this one thing, this monumental thing for yourself.

Conclusion

I think that all femme presenting people should own the things necessary to allow them the freedoms we all so desperately crave. Whether that be the ability to fit in, stand out, get out, or dive in. This is not an exhaustive list, and of course you can take it or leave it, but it is a list of my personal recommendations. I have found since owning these things, I am never unprepared in social situations, and I am never trapped.

As with all things the care that we take of the things we call ours makes all the difference. If your little black outfit is threadbare, and your red pumps are scuffed, your diamond earrings lose a backing, your string of pearls falls apart, and the car is out of gas simply possessing them won't be enough. The care of the things that allow us to be free is just another form of self care. I wish you all the best in your bad ass femme lives!
