PCOS & Me...

Am I really a woman?

So as a young girl, I was always hairier than the other girls and a little chubbier too. My mum used to make passing jokes about me being her little gorilla, which was funny I guess... until I became a teenager. I remember being about 12 and finally starting my period. I was rather excited to finally be "becoming a woman." All was going well until I turned 13 and started having periods once every three months (if that). I felt like I’d been stripped of my womanhood. But ah well, not a big deal, right?

Not only was I having infrequent periods, but I was also extremely hairy. My back, face, and legs were sooo bloody hairy it was unreal. However, to make matters worse any time I shaved I would get itchy prickly red ingrown hairs that would torment me morning till night. At 17 I met my boyfriend (who I’ve been with for the best part of six years). I got really comfortable with him, and the pounds started piling on. Before I knew it I was 15 stones and counting and my periods became even less regular. I started on a contraceptive pill and a few months later, to my horror, I started growing a beard. Yep, a beard. Sexy, right? OK, not like a full-on man beard but long thick hairs would grow out of my chin now and again. Cleverly, I would drag them out with my bacteria infested fingers and create horrible reactions. My chin was a mess!

Fast forward to when I turned 19 or 20, my doctor FINALLY decided to send me for tests after years of me asking him to! A few weeks later I got a call from the GP. Guess what? I had PCOS! Not only PCOS, but I was also pre-diabetic. I was so sad…why meeee?

A few years later and a little wiser, I am coping a lot better. My periods are still irregular but are a lot more often than they once were. I’m still overweight, but it’s a lot more controlled. I understand my body, and I try to work out and eat a more balanced diet, which definitely helps. My bodily hair still exists; however, I hardly ever get ingrown hairs now, and I tend to get a professional wax, which also helps! Under my chin is still pretty bad, however, I no longer use my horrid fingers to rip out the hairs. I either tweeze them or I get them threaded by the amazing ladies that do my eyebrows. After this, I use the most amazing product known to man. If you're suffering with bad skin, your face needs a detox! The product is the Superdrug Vitamin C Detox Skincare Invigorating Skin Booster. Vitamin C is great for brightening the skin and helping reduce an uneven skin tone, and this is EXACTLY what this product does for me. It also calms down any spots I have, which is great! If you have acne (which is certainly what I have/had under my chin), you NEED to try this. This product has cleared up my skin and makes my skin so much smoother and brighter, it’s amazing.

I digress. So, even though things were seeming dreadful in the beginning I’m finally getting my shit together and accepting who God made me. I know I will have kids at some point in the future and I’m no longer stressing about my PCOS. I also have an amazing man who loves me despite all my flaws and that’s all that matters. I will definitely start a weight loss journey pretty soon, because although it's great to "accept your flaws," it's also great to be healthy. Being overweight heightens the symptoms of PCOS, and so I definitely need to lose a few pounds. Anyway, after rambling on for ages I just want you all to remember that no matter what, you are so so so beautiful and there is nobody as amazing and unique as you, so embrace it.

Thank you so much for reading. I love you lots.
