Men vs Women

Who rules?

There are so many scenarios where men think they are better than women, have better skills, knowledge and ability, and when it is evident they are not.

Take driving for instance. Why is it, when accompanied by a male passenger, we must keep our hands on the wheel, our eyes on the road, yet they feel the necessity to check every button, switch and gadget while we drive? Adjusting mirrors, air vents, heating controls and then the radio to their satisfaction. Yet, when you get into their car, you are restricted from even touching the heating when your feet are freezing and your face is burning. Then, when they start driving, they proceed o check every bit of the car dashboard, what’s in the glove compartment, dust the top of the dash, move every mirror and then advise you to watch the buckles or straps of your handbag in case they mark the car.

Road rage is now a part of the drive for me. From those who have their spotlights on when it isn’t foggy or hazardous driving conditions, to those who drive too close to the car in front, everyone becomes a policeman when they are behind the wheel and witness such law-breaking events.

The use, or should I say nonuse of indicators, is usually another red flag in the rant of incompetent drivers who shouldn’t be allowed on the road. Shouting and swearing obviously exudes from our car, travelling at 50 miles an hour into the car of the irresponsible person so they know what they are doing wrong, also at the expense of my eardrums.

On many an occasion, I have been a passenger in the car when my husband was driving, watching a car in front who is cutting up other drivers. It is such an attack on a man’s masculinity and strength when another car overtakes, especially if it is the same make and model and then a game of cat and mouse ensues, racing and taking chances which endangers the lives of other innocent road users.

Building flatpacks of drawers, wardrobes and other furniture is another situation. Who needs instructions when you clearly need to just look at the thirty separate parts to be assembled and then automatically know where everyone goes and in which order they go? Until the time when something is upside down, doesn’t fit or missing then, it is our job to find out why it is the factory’s fault for creating it wrongly.

And of course, nothing is ever built with quality nowadays, especially when men use all their strength to screw in a screw that clearly needs time and patience but tends to go straight through to the other side when whizzed in with a cordless drill. Using the glue is of course no necessary as, the dowels and the screws are strong enough to hold it together, until it starts to slightly tilt and cannot take the stress of moving it to clean behind.

Why is it men never challenge us on ironing and, in cases when they do, it is normally ex-military who have been responsible for immaculate uniforms who tend to excel? I’ll tell you why, because ironing takes time and patience and a skill to turn the heat of the iron up and down, taking valuable time away from throwing the clothes into the cupboard as a done job.

Of course, when it comes to actually carrying out some housework to help out at home, the way a man does this is always the better way to that of a woman who has carried it out regularly, for weeks on end. Bright ideas to save time, do a better job and have a better method are repeated and used to remind everyone of their ability on that one occasion they made an effort. Heaven help the person who uses a spoon when they have just washed the dishes and put everything away.

Yet, whenever I get help, rather than point out these points, I find it easier to allow him to think how great he was so next time, as he made such a good job, he can do it again!
