Fat and Skinny Shaming

Stuck in the Middle

Society has ways of developing a right and wrong view of what true beauty is, going as far as blaming the makers of the Barbie doll for demonstrating an illusion of what beauty is too young girls. Females are the main target when it comes to beauty, but males suffer too. There are promotions for beauty being on the inside because of how the shapes of bodies are looked down upon. The point to this is to show a side that isn’t shown as often as it should be.

Fat Shaming is the most common way to determine the beauty of one’s body. People of a heavier size are told how their body is not the definition of beauty. They suffer from trying to fit into the beauty scale. Society mixes the idea of beauty with the act to love yourself. I have had overweight friends who got fat shamed and even would fat shame themselves. Fat shaming is an act of those who believe being overweight is that person’s fault. Eating is not the only cause of gaining weight. People may gain weight from what kind of food they eat as well as what they drink and how much of it, not enough exercise, walking or moving around in general, sitting too much; driving for long periods of time or not using their legs when possible, being stressed out, depression, etc. Shaming those of a bigger size shows how unwilling you are to get to know them as who they are instead of how they look. It is more of the one who is doing the shaming’s problem than the one who is getting shamed.

Unlike fat shaming, skinny shaming is seen more as an attention seeking act. Slimmer people can feel like they are fat too. It’s no different from being fat-shamed other than being called an attention seeker because they go through the same pain. Slimmer people are named skeletons and told that they need to eat more. As said before, weight gain or weight loss is not only caused by eating. Thinner people may not be able to gain weight. I relate to this because I have been thin my whole life. I have been told to eat more, how boney I am, I am too skinny, and have seen people worry about my weight. The thing about skinny shaming is it causes the exact same pain as fat shaming does. You feel like you are not beautiful, doing something wrong, will never fit in, need to change, and many more things that society has formed in our minds. Society made it where nothing is the correct way, and nobody will ever be content because there is always something better and that is why we are always being compared and looked down upon.

I believe if you are considered healthy and you take care of yourself regardless of being above or below average in weight, you are still beautiful. Everyone has a story and they should not be judged by the way they look. We do not know their story of how or why they look the way they do. The main thing that matters most is that they are being themselves. Being yourself is more than beautiful and it should be embraced no matter what others think. Society was formed by the most insecure bullies of the world and the only way they have power is if you give them the attention that they crave. It’s okay to be yourself, it’s okay to be above or below average in weight, and it is okay to love your body the way it is!
