Women, more often than not, are pressured to conform to ridiculous beauty standards. Even now in the 21st century, when we're supposed to be free to celebrate who we are and what we are - as long as we're not doing anything illegal.

The problem with this sort of thing is that both men and women aren't just scrutinized and told to lose/gain weight, but also objectified and sexualized.

Due to their line of work, there are lots of pros and cons to being a celebrity. One of the cons is undoubtedly the uncalled-for body 'critics.' One pro is the ability to bite back and inspire (or entertain) us regular folks using their large social platforms.

Daisy Ridley knows that size doesn't define her being a woman of substance; here are eight more kick-ass celebrities like her.

9. Daisy Ridley

This has been deleted.

A troll posted this screenshot of Rey, but attached an appalling speech bubble to it. Ridley responded, but she deleted the photo due to fans giving the troll a hard time.

Ridley, being the awesome girl that she is, asked her fans to be kind and spare the troll any more Internet backlash. The troll probably forgot that Rey's a scavenger and got no time for curves.

8. Carrie Fisher

In an interview with Good Housekeeping, General Leia said,

"They don’t want to hire all of me – only about three-quarters! ”
“Nothing changes, it’s an appearance-driven thing. I’m in a business where the only thing that matters is weight and appearance. That is so messed up. They might as well say get younger, because that’s how easy it is.”

In my opinion, she aged well, and kept her humor too!

7. Ariel Winter

Instagram

Who knew that an innocent photo with my nieces would turn into this? The height of a girl's skirt or whatever she is wearing for that matter, does not imply what she is asking for. It sickens me to think at 17 years old, a photo of myself with my nieces is suggesting that I'm "asking for it". I typically never give power to the mean things people bravely say behind their computer screens on the Internet, but this is for the girls who are constantly bullied whether it be online or at school.. You are not asking for anything because of what you are wearing- you are expressing yourself and don't you ever think you deserve the negativity as the consequence to what you are wearing- YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL. Celebrate you and don't let anyone's comments allow you to think less of yourself. Us girls have to stick together!!!!!!

6. Demi Lovato

Photo: Vanity Fair

Demi battled her own demons in the past, and hasn't been shy to admit it to encourage others to get better as well. One of the most confident things I've seen her do was her nude photoshoot with Vanity Fair.

She explained the sudden idea,

“If there’s one thing I’ve learned in the past day, it’s that life is too short,” she said. “I’m about to launch an album that finally represents who I truly am. How do I embrace this new chapter in my life? How do I really walk the walk? What does it mean to be confident? It means letting go, being authentic, saying I don’t give a fuck and this is who I am. I want to show the side of me that’s real, that’s liberated, that’s free. What if we do a photo shoot where it’s totally raw? Super-sexy, but no makeup, no fancy lighting, no retouching, and no clothing. Let’s do it here, let’s do it now.”

5. Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez dealt with a lot of trolls in 2015, and speaking to The Cruz Show, the singer and actress said,

“You have to understand that I dealt with a lot of body-shaming this year, and I've never experienced that before.”
“I don't care about that stuff, but I did start gaining weight and I didn't really mind it, I enjoyed it." It's a beautiful thing for a woman to love the way her body changes and grows in different ways, but of course strangers on the Internet have to be rude dicks about it for some reason.”

She was hurt by some criticisms; she said,

"Man, that hurt ... That was really hurtful."

But speaking about her album cover, she had this to say:

"I'm not going to give a fuck what people ... I'm not going to care," she said. "I'm not going to let them get to me. I can do what I want."

4. Melissa McCarthy

Melissa is such a hilarious and brutally honest person. You'd think those pesky body-shaming critics would think twice before commenting on her appearance rather than her acting chops.

3. Anna Paquin

Anna Paquin looked gorgeous in this ensemble for The Good Dinosaur premiere, but not all of us agree. In a series of tweets, Paquin shut down the haters.

And this made me laugh:

2. Ariana Grande

Back in 2015, Ariana Grande and Ariel Winter were pitted against each other, for no apparent reason other than to I dunno, make these gorgeous ladies fight? (Not gonna happen!)

here we go again.... Sure I'm not the only 1 feeling this way today!! in case you need a reminder, you're beautiful — Ariana Grande (@ArianaGrande) November 2, 2015

And this is why I love this dangerous woman.

1. Kim Kardashian

Though the Internet was divided yet again by the nude selfie Kim K posted a day before IWD2016, perhaps the best thing that came out of it was the essay she penned on her website. I think she planned this all along. Way to go, Kim!

"I am empowered by my body, I am empowered by my sexuality. I am empowered by feeling comfortable in my skin. I am empowered by showing the world my flaws and not being afraid of what anyone is going to say about me. And I hope that through this platform I have been given, I can encourage the same empowerment for girls and women all over the world."
"I lived through the embarrassment and fear, and decided to say who cares, do better, move on. I shouldn’t have to constantly be on the defense, listing off my accomplishments just to prove that I am more than something that happened 13 years ago."

If there's anything these people taught us, when it comes to criticisms, they have it harder - but they do not give in to negativity. They inspire us all to flaunt and love what we were blessed with... Warts and all!

In all seriousness though, let's celebrate ourselves and our individualities.

Beauty is diversity, but it remains only skin deep. At the end of the day, it's truly WHO we are inside that matters, not what we look like.
