Changing the Stigma of a Woman's Period

Moon Cycles: Mirroring Menstruation With the Full Moon

When I first started my period, I was horrified to walk on the path to womanhood. The women around me talked big about how painful the NORMAL life process was. At a young age, I already had a preconceived idea that being on your period was something to dread. “You're moody today. Are you PMSing?” is a common phrase used by men and women. It seemed to me that a normal part of a woman’s monthly process has become an excuse for men and woman to blame unrecognized emotion.

What is a moon cycle?

The term moon cycle has been circulating quite frequently. Although, when referring to the dictionary it refers to the phases of our moon. The term moon cycle that I am going to talk about refers to the cycle once a month of women's menstruation.

Yes, I said menstruation. Period. Time of the month. On the rag. Monthlies. The Curse.

The Curse?

Many view our natural body functions as a curse. So, what does that say about society? And guess how that affects our inward attitude towards ourselves.

Is this what we want for future females to feel? Inward hate towards our gender? Or crawling into a ball until the pain goes away? How about popping pain medicine for the remainder of the week?

Much like the moon, ladies go through phases and sometimes what’s happening in our bodies can cause chaos.

This is the feminine energy, a big ball of chaos which no one will understand. I just love mysteries.

Now think for a minute of how the world sees the full moon….

As a doula, mother, and woman, I know the full moon can affect pregnant women to go into labor, kids to act up, and moods to be full on ecstasy or anger.

At its fullest, the full moon can shift the moods of many and bring about change being negative or positive. The full moon can be viewed, at its greatest power, as a time to release.

Next full moon, release any unwanted patterns, energies, or situations and start anew.

How can we reclaim our bodies?

A woman’s cycle can be viewed in a similar aspect as the powerful full moon.

Your monthly cycle can be viewed as a time to recover, listen, shred, and start over again.

A woman’s period is when we are at our highest power!

We can feel pain, sadness, joy, happiness, anger, and our abilities are heightened. We can connect with the earth much like the moon.

What to Do During a Full & New Moon + Your Moon Cycle?

A new moon is often viewed as a fresh start. A time for renewal or starting a new project. A time to set goals.

A woman’s ovulation can be seen the same way. We have released and begun a new cycle. We feel fresh, sexy, young, and brand new.

This is a great time to embrace our new self. Wear that sexy dress, walk around the house naked, get pampered, or basically do whatever empowers you to be that sexy you that YOU are!

During a full moon or when you are on your moon cycle, keep it simple. Soak up the stress of the day in a bubble bath. Declutter your to-do list, meaning scratch it off and take time for you. You are going to be feeling a lot and this is a great time to journal, sleep, be alone, or focus inward!

Conclusion

Call that time of the month what you like, but what I do ask is for you to embrace the magical wisdom within and your scared self.

Shake that stigma off!

Tips: Start paying attention to your feelings and thoughts during the full moon and your moon cycle. Record them and review them again later in the month. Do you feel the same way?

What’s your inner wisdom telling you?
