There was this golden ray shining through the window that magically danced across the bed. Gosh, I’ve missed mornings in bed. Typically at this time, I would be already at school, making copies, sharpening pencils, in the attempt to have the classroom well equipped to handle the day. Within the first 15 minutes of the late bell, regardless of my efforts and preparations, there are always surprise events that I am unprepared for. Johnny had a paper cut, no blood, but I know the incessant whining that would continue is not worth the time needed in hunting down a single band-aid. The band-aid would bring calmness back to the classroom. But only until Henry's water bottle would spill everywhere. Damn, I would always think, I should just buy him a new one that he can't GNAW ON like a teething puppy. He always chewed on his water bottles, his parents must have noticed too because he would come in showing off his new one every few weeks, which would always result in the same chewed-up Spilling container as the last. It didn't seem worth a phone call though. It only took a few moments to clean up, unless yes, we were out of paper towels. I was used to buying supplies for the class, but I never paid close enough attention to when they were running out. It was predictable chaos that I have grown accustomed to.
