8 Things to Consider Before Committing to a Vivid Hair Color!

Being a Shining Unicorn is HARD work!

This is a list of 8 things to consider before committing to a vivid hair color.

1. It is a process!

If you are wanting to switch it up and go vivid, then you NEED to understand that it is a process! In order to put a vivid color on your hair, your hair needs to be light, and if your hair is dark, this may take more than one processing venture; you have to be patient with the process and trust your Stylist to know what is best for your hair along the way!

2. It is a lot of upkeep!

Having a vivid hair color isn't something that you can just get done once or twice a year; it requires a lot of upkeep. Most vivid coloring options are temporary color, which means it's not going to last forever (but if you're a true Unicorn, this is plus because you can change it up more often!). Since having a vivid color in your hair requires a lot of upkeep you have to also understand that it is going to be a more expensive venture than other coloring options; if you cannot afford to keep up with it, it is probably best that you find another route to take (unless you are okay with the faded version of your color, which some people are!).

3. You need good product!

If you are going to have your hair colored by a professional, then you need good product regardless of the color you are going for, but it is especially important with vivid colors! Because most vivids are temporary color, you need to have product that is specifically designed to help make that color last as long as possible. If you get your hair professionally done and you are not using professional product, most salons will not guarantee the color because non-professional products strip the color from your hair much quicker; so spend that extra bit on money on the professional product. Trust me, it is going to make that vivid stay vivid MUCH longer!

4. Cold showers, anyone?

I know, I know...most of us don't like cold showers, BUT, it is a necessary evil when you have vivid hair. The warm/hot water is much more likely to fade your color, and while taking cold showers might not always seem ideal, they will keep you looking like a pretty Unicorn longer, and who doesn't want that?! (PLUS, they're great for your skin!) While we're on the subject of showers; try to spread out the days that you wash your hair. Every time you wash your hair, the color is going to fade a little bit more. It isn't healthy or even necessary to wash your hair every day, so the longer you can go in between washes, (depending on how high your sebum production levels are) the better.

5. Be cautious about that heat!

Again we are talking about heat, but it really does effect your color! If you're anything like me, you take heat to your hair almost every day; whether it be to straighten or curl our hair, or even just to blow dry your hair. You need to be cautious about the amount of heat you are using on your hair. When you put a vivid color on your hair you most likely were required to lighten your hair (unless you are a natural level 8 or higher). Because your hair has been lightened, it is more fragile. It is also more likely to break with high heat, so use a heat protection spray and keep the heat low. Doing this may mean that it take a little bit longer to do your hair, but it will keep the vividness and the integrity of your hair and that is worth it!

6. Be aware of your wardrobe!

You need to really think about the clothes that you own before deciding what vivid color you would like to put on your hair. If you wear a lot of red, you might not want to color your hair orange (or you might! You do YOU). If matching "complementary" colors is something that is important to you, just make sure you think through your wardrobe before putting that color on!

7. Expect to be the center of attention!

Even though having vivid hair is something that is very popular right now, it is still eye-catching, so people will stare. People will stare either because they love it, or because they hate it. If you don't like being the center of attention, then you might want to consider slowly working yourself up to a full vivid; maybe starting out with a peek-a-boo and slowly working your way up. It is something that people will comment on and will want to touch, so make sure you adequately prepare yourself mentally if personal space is an issue for you. If it is something that you want to do, you CAN get yourself to a point where you feel comfortable being the center of attention; YOU GOT THIS! And lastly...

8. Own it!!

If you want vivid hair, then do it! OWN IT!! You are the master of your design, and it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. If you want to be a shining beacon of light in this otherwise dark world, then I commend you, and I love you. Just rock it out no matter what others may think! This is your hair and your life, and I just know you look fabulous! Keep SHINING my friends!!
