Amazing female characters

What we watch can almost influence us to be better or act like the characters we see. This is probably the reason parents don’t like when their kids watch Spongebob and rather they watch shows with more dynamic characters. Characters are on of the biggest part of the storytelling—actually scratch that, they’re the biggest. Some characters we don’t like and want to punch them through the TV; others we love the point we’re on the verge of tears. Today I would like to touch on female characters, but not just any females—the badass female characters who have the attitude we wish we had when we’re lying on the couch with popcorn. Now what makes a female character badass? To me, a female character is bad ass when she stirs away from the normal and has new thoughts and does risky things that we may not like. She isn’t a perfect character and reflects a real person and not just a fantasy. Badass doesn’t mean they don’t cry or show emotions, it instead means they make choices for themselves and later on can accept responsibility for those choices. Here are some tv female characters from shows I love that I find badass.

1. Olivia Pope

Olivia Pope from is a former White House employee with her own “law” firm played by Kerry Washington in the drama and political series Scandal. The first second we see Olivia she is delegating and struts with no shame even though she has had an affair with the leader of the free world. Saving people’s lives and maybe ending others in the process Olivia is a force to be reckoned with. All of her words are with assurance and she embodies a strong black women whose hair is never frizzy. Sure she is extremely strong, but she does have times where she is vulnerable thus leading her to be stronger. While she may not be the best law abiding citizen, she is the definition of a boss woman.

2. Arizona Robbins

Arizona Robbins is a Pediatric surgeon on the drama series Grey’s Anatomy played by Jessica Chapsaw. While they are many bad ass woman on the beloved medical show I wanted to highlight Arizona because I feel she is a bit unsung. Why is she bad ass? For starters she is unapologetically herself from being an out gay women to never letting anyone down her beautiful spirit. Her heart is humongous and she truly cares for everyone even those who are deemed her competition. While being very caring she also doesn’t pose as a rug and doesn’t let anyone bully her. She’s kind, but this is definitely isn’t a weakness for her. Again she has her moments where push come to shove and she lets out her anger, but she always manages to come back to her kind nature.

3. Joan Holloway

Joan Holloway is a office manager on the TV show Madmen played by Christiana Hendricks. Even though the show takes place in the 60s where women were just starting to get in the workforce, Joan doesn’t succumb to society—well not until season 3. She doesn’t take any bullshit from any of the men, and demands respect when she walks into the room. One thing that makes her badass is to a certain extent she sort of helps the other girls in the marketing firm. Later on in the show she does have to choose between her home life and work life, but she does it with grace. Matter of fact, she does everything with grace in her fashionable pantsuits.

4. Stef Adams Foster

Stef Foster is a loving wife, mother, and cop on the drama series The Fosters played by Terri Polo. What makes Stef so bad ass is she takes on multiple challenges at home and obviously in her work. In regards to her home life in the first season of the show she already has three kids with her wife Lena, but out of the goodness of her heart she welcomes Callie and Jude in her home. In terms of disciplining the kids she is what we would call the bad cop, but during the day when she is a police officer she doesn’t abuse her power while still achieving her goal of wanting to protect people. During this time in 2019 our perception of the police has been warped and it was nice to see a police officer representing the good cops in the world. Along with her work Stef is strong and doesn’t let anything get to her not even her battle with breast cancer. She truly is a character that you immediately fall in love with.

5. Fiona Gallagher

Fiona Gallagher is an older sister who takes care of her siblings due to her alcoholic father played by Emily Rossum on the comedy series Shameless. I made her the last one on my list, because she is leaving the show and it saddens me deeply. In the Southside of Chicago, Fiona struggles to control her out of control household only in her twenties. She to me is badass because she is purely selfless and doesn’t waste her time complaining. Instead she manages her household and tries to pay the bills. Her childhood was taken away from her, but you don’t see her shed one tear about it as she tries to put food on the table. She is the definition of someone taking rotten bananas and turning them into banana bread. She does have her moments where there are some things she can’t handle, but she always makes a comeback and strives through. I am really going to miss her only the show, and I don’t know how it’s going to be without her.
